The 5-9 Formula Line Breakk

Diaper Book Club

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your side hustle? What made you want to start it?

Diaper Book Club is a kids brand that was launched in 2019. We focus on making cool, unique products that parents will love just as much as the kids do. Our top selling products are childrenā€™s books such as the viral book "R is for Rolex: ABCs for the future watch collector". We also produce clothes, shoes, and toys.

My full-time job is in advertising and graphic design. At the time I started Diaper Book Club, I was working at an app company running Facebook and Google ads to get them more installs.

The idea for Diaper Book Club came to me after a trip to Miami. I saw people were making a ton of money off simple and creative novelties. I noticed people were willing to spend more on things that are unique and express their interests.

Before that Miami trip, I always had ideas of starting a business, but I would think big. I would think of an app idea or a tech business that would require millions in funding and a team of professionals.

This time, I focused on my strengths and started brainstorming things I can do on my own or as a small team with the friends I have. I came up with childrenā€™s books because it's a super visual product which I knew would make marketing and virality on social media much more probable. Also, since it's just artwork and text, it was something I could do on my own which minimizes the upfront costs of the business.

Lastly, I focused on topics of my own interests. Not only did this make the work fun, it made the books more genuine. By writing about things that I'm really into such as watches, cars and football, I made products that enthusiasts of these hobbies strongly relate to - it didn't feel like a poser was making them.

How do you manage your time between your main job and your side hustle?

Working in tech, my 9-5 is a remote position which helps a lot since I can multitask during downtime.

Since both my main job and the business are marketing heavy fields, they complement one another. There are countless times where I will implement a successful idea from my business to my work and vice versa.

How do you define success for your side hustle?

Sales! The main goal is to grow, and we can't do that if sales aren't increasing. There are always side goals that we look at such as getting into a cool store or increasing the total customer checkout average, but the objective is always sales based.

Have you found any specific strategies or platforms to be particularly effective when marketing your business?

We try everything! Things are constantly changing so we are always testing new platforms and cutting inefficient ones out.

We reach out to new retailers regularly and love adding new ones. It's not necessarily the biggest in terms of revenue but since our products are so visual, we believe that getting them in peopleā€™s hands at stores will help online conversions.

How do you stay adaptable to industry trends and changes?

Since the business is directly related to my interests, staying up to date is my form of entertainment. For example, if Instagram is full of the latest sneaker releases and football transfer rumours, this is technically related to product development.

Another way is by picking 2 or 3 brands that we think are doing a great job at marketing and branding and analyse what they are doing. If they start trying something, we will consider it as well.
