Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your side hustle?
Hello, my name is Cris, I live in sunny South Florida, and I own a eBay reselling store. The store has been active since 2016 and through it, I have sold over 3.5k items. These items range from collectibles such as toys, video games, and trading cards to a wide variety of menās, womenās, and kids clothing. Most of these items are sourced from thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales, and other resellers. It is a great way to recycle items and give new homes to items with value.
What was your main inspiration for starting this side hustle?
In high school I was into sports jerseys and collectable shoes such as Nike SBās and Nike Air Jordans. I had watched videos of thrifters at the time who would find these items at thrift stores, pawn shops, and flea markets at affordable prices. Additionally at the time I collected PokĆ©mon cards and had bought and sold via Facebook Groups that were nationwide. The desire to find cheap items that had value coupled with the knowledge of knowing how to complete a transaction and ship items nationwide led me to pursue reselling other items that also had value.
Do you have a particular niche you focus on?
Initially my niche was sneakers and sports jerseys since I was the most familiar with them. I am pushing ten years of reselling so at this point I like to believe that I am knowledgeable on the value of a wide variety of items. The items I love finding and feel the most comfortable in terms of sourcing and verifying the authenticity are sneakers, sports jerseys, toys from the 90s-00s, trading cards such as Yu-Gi-Oh, PokƩmon, Magic the Gathering, sports cards specifically MLB & NBA, and video games for Nintendo and Sony game systems from the 90s-00s.
Which selling platforms have you had the most success on?
So, I've sold on multiple platforms, eBay, Grailed, Poshmark, Mercari, OfferUp, and even Craigslist back in the day. I've had the most success on eBay, Grailed, and OfferUp in that order. Most of my items are listed on eBay. Items that are high fashion or streetwear are specifically saved for Grailed. Items that have value but may be a hassle to ship are listed on OfferUp since it is primarily a local app.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in their flipping journey?
The best advice I could give would be to make connections and source often at yard/garage sales and flea markets. Both are excellent for sourcing cheap items and can lead to future opportunities through interacting with other members of your community. I know for the first few years I would only focus on the transaction in front of me instead of the possible transactions that could have occurred due to building a business relationship with vendors.
