Enhance Medical Aesthetics

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your side hustle?

I am a qualified and NMC registered Adult Nurse. I currently work in the NHS as a Community Staff Nurse performing many procedures in people homes such as end of life care, catheterisation, wound care and injectable medication administration. I have worked in healthcare for over 10 years. I have a Foundation Degree in core sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology) a Bachelors degree in Biomedical Science with Human Biology and a Masters Degree in Adult Nursing.

My side hustle is also in a similar field but with a focus on medical aesthetics which include procedures such as dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, and vitamin B12 injections.

How did you get started with it?

I found that throughout my time at university I really enjoyed learning about and performing injectables. This interest led me to attend the award-winning training academy Skin Viva, where I learnt theory and practical knowledge in anti-wrinkle injections and dermal filler.

Once I had started my business and my confidence grew, I became interested in skincare and trained in treatments such as chemical peels, medical micro needling and facials. I am very passionate about enhancing one’s natural beauty.

How do you manage your time between your main job and your side hustle?

I am a full-time nurse and do my aesthetic clinics on a weekend at present. I’m looking to expand and hoping to work in the aesthetics field full-time soon.

Working in the NHS is very busy, but my business is a massive priority to me. Although I only do clinics on a weekend, owning a business is like having another full-time job. I schedule my content days and ensure I am connecting with my clients/audience on a regular basis.

Each week I write a to-do list and I organise my time on my current priority. For example, if my priority is purchasing stock from my supplier because I have a clinic coming up, I will ensure this is at the top of my to-do list. Each week I set time out of my daily activities to plan my content on apps such as Instagram, you can schedule a time in the future to post content, I use this tool when I have a busy schedule which ensures I am still connecting and engaging with my audience.

What are some key lessons you’ve learned from running your own business?

I have learnt many things throughout my journey of owning my own business. Here are a few:

- Progress does not happen overnight; it takes time and continued effort.

- Not to depend on anyone else. If I want something done, I must do it myself.

- Things haven’t always gone the way I had planned, but that’s ok, I regroup and try again. Sometimes its trial and error and what might work for someone else hasn’t worked for me and vice versa.

- As a perfectionist I have found it very tough mentally and emotionally when something hasn’t gone as expected but when this happens, it’s simply just a learning curve and a good way to find somewhere to improve.

- I’m very proud and independent so I have sometimes found it difficult asking for help from others. However, I have learnt to be open-minded and receptive to other ideas and support to help my business grow.

What advice do you have for someone looking to start their own side hustle?

- Research the niche. Work out what sets you aside from your competitors.

- Always keep learning and broadening your knowledge.

- Keep posting content to connect to your audience.

- Think outside the box of ways you can keep your audience engaged. Use social media for marketing purposes.

- Don’t be shy to throw yourself out there, you will not gain clients by not putting your full attention to your business.

- The first year is the most difficult when building a client base but with consistency, you will get there.

- Ask for support when things get tough. Nurture yourself and your wellbeing; your business cannot grow without you.
