Personal Training Side Hustle Earning $2k/Month
How Jessica grew her side hustle to complement her full-time salary with just a few hours a week.
Happy Sunday. This week weāre talking with Jessica, a marketing manager who runs a side hustle as a personal trainer. Over the past 3 years she has built her side business to earn up to $2k a month in additional income. In this interview sheāll cover:
Using social media as a way to promote your work and gain new clients.
The importance of niching down to one particular aspect of personal training.
Allowing your clients to be your ambassadors to grow your business.
Now, over to Jessica!
Personal Training Side Hustle
Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your business?
My name is Jessica, and Iām a certified personal trainer with a passion for helping people achieve their fitness goals. By day, I work as a full-time marketing manager, but I started my personal training side hustle about three years ago to combine my love of fitness with a way to support others in their health journey. I primarily work with clients on evenings and weekends, offering one-on-one coaching and small group classes, both in-person and virtually.
My focus is on creating personalized fitness plans that fit into my clients' busy schedules. I specialize in strength training, functional fitness, and weight loss strategies, but I also emphasize mental well-being and sustainable lifestyle changes. The flexibility of working one-on-one allows me to adapt to each personās unique needs, which is something I really enjoy.
What was your main inspiration for getting into this niche?
My main inspiration came from my own fitness journey. I wasnāt always into health and wellnessāin fact, I struggled with consistency and confidence for years. But once I started seeing the physical and mental benefits of regular exercise, I wanted to help others experience the same transformation.
Additionally, I noticed a gap in the market for trainers who focus on everyday people rather than elite athletes. I wanted to create an environment where anyone, regardless of their starting point, felt comfortable and supported. Watching clients gain strength, improve their health, and build confidence has been the most rewarding part of the journey.
How do you define success in your business?
For me, success isnāt just the number of clients I work with or the money I bring ināalthough those are certainly important aspects. True success is seeing my clients achieve their goals, whether thatās running their first 5K, losing weight, or simply feeling stronger and healthier in their daily lives.
Building meaningful relationships is also really important. Many of my clients have become friends, and seeing how fitness has positively impacted their overall outlook on life is incredibly fulfilling. Knowing Iāve played a role in someoneās journey to better health is the ultimate win for me.
If you were to start again from scratch, what would you do differently?
If I could start over, I would have spent more time initially building my brand and establishing a niche audience. Early on, I tried to appeal to everyone, which made it harder to attract the right clients. Focusing on a specific target market, like busy professionals or beginners, would have allowed me to stand out more quickly.
I also would have invested in better marketing tools earlier. Things like a professional website, client management software, and social media content planning have made a huge difference as my business has grown. If I had implemented these systems from the start, I think I could have scaled faster and more efficiently.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out with a similar gig?
My biggest piece of advice is to focus on building relationships and trust. Word-of-mouth referrals are invaluable in the fitness industry, especially when youāre starting out. Be genuinely invested in your clientsā progress and success, and theyāll be your best ambassadors.
Iād also recommend starting small and staying consistent. Itās easy to get overwhelmed trying to do too much at once, especially if this is a side hustle. Begin with a few clients, refine your process, and grow gradually. Lastly, donāt underestimate the power of social mediaāitās a free and effective way to showcase your expertise and connect with potential clients.
How much do you earn from this business?
As a side hustle, my personal training business brings in about $1,500 to $2,000 per month, depending on how many clients I take on and the type of sessions they book. Itās not a full-time income, but itās a great supplement to my main job and allows me to save for things like travel and continuing education courses.
The income has grown steadily since I started, and Iāve been able to increase my rates as Iāve gained more experience and certifications.
