The 5-9 Formula Line Breakk

Chris from Freelance Framework

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your side hustle?

I've been a full-time freelance writer for over 15 years. Writing is my passion, and I've been unwavering in my dedication to it throughout the years. I am truly thankful for the career I've built.

As for my side hustle, in late 2023, I started a newsletter called Freelance Framework. Freelance Framework is a daily newsletter that shares freelance writing gigs with writers from all over the world. In roughly six months, it has grown to approximately 5,500 subscribers, and I hope to reach closer to 10,000 by the end of 2024.

What was your main inspiration for starting the newsletter in your niche?

As a freelance writer, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to land new clients. It's extremely time-consuming to find job opportunities. By doing the legwork for freelance writers, I can save them valuable time. This allows them to focus on applying, pitching, and making their clients happy. Helping others in this way has always been a driving force for me.

How do you balance the time between your main job and your side hustle?

Fortunately, since my side hustle aligns closely with my primary job, there are many overlapping opportunities. For example, while I am searching for work for myself, I often come across gigs that I can share in my newsletter.

Overall, I spend roughly three to four hours each evening, five days a week, finding gigs and writing the newsletter itself. It’s a significant commitment, but I love what I do, and that passion keeps me motivated.

What is the definition of success for your side hustle?

My primary goal is to help other freelance writers find work. I believe this mission is the reason for the success I've experienced so far. Additionally, I have set both short-term and long-term income growth goals. While these financial targets are not my main focus, I do dream of the day when Freelance Framework could generate a full-time income for me.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a similar field?

Just go for it. I sat on this idea for several years before finally taking the first step in December 2023. Initially, success seemed like a long shot, but soon enough, I found myself moving in the right direction.

Also, don't feel pressured to have your side hustle replace your day job immediately. There are many high-powered growth stories, especially in the newsletter space, that serve as great inspiration. However, don't get caught up in chasing something nearly impossible to attain. Set reasonable goals, achieve them, and then reassess. This steady approach will help you build a sustainable and fulfilling side business.
