Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your side hustle?

Hi, my name is Tobias. I'm a family man living in Texas with my wonderful wife and our four daughters. In addition to my primary job, I have a side hustle as a handyman, specialising in minor electrical services. This side gig allows me to use my skills to help people with various home and automotive projects.

How did you get started in this field?

My journey into this field began many years ago when I started installing aftermarket stereo systems in vehicles. This initial experience sparked my interest and provided a solid foundation for my skills. Later, I worked for an appliance and electronics company as a Delivery Installation Technician. In that role, I received extensive training in installing various home appliances and electronics.

Through this job, I learned how to install flat-screen TVs, surround sound systems, and CCTV cameras, among other things. This hands-on experience expanded my expertise and eventually led to the development of my handyman services. Even today, I still install car stereos and other electrical appliances, but my services have grown to include a wider range of tasks.

How do you balance this between your full-time job?

I’m fortunate that my primary job only requires me to work four days a week. This schedule gives me ample time to focus on my side hustle. I typically serve most of my clients from Friday to Sunday, allowing me to maintain a healthy work-life balance. By sticking to a structured schedule, I can ensure that I have quality time with my family while still dedicating time to my side business.

How do you define success in your niche?

For me, success in my side hustle is measured by the continuous flow of side jobs. Most of my clients come through word of mouth, so it’s crucial that I complete each job to a high standard. Satisfied clients are more likely to use my services again or recommend me to their friends and family. I aim to have jobs scheduled out months in advance, which helps guarantee a steady stream of additional income.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a similar field?

One of the key strategies that has contributed to my success is documenting my work on social media. I record the process and results of my jobs and post them on TikTok, Instagram, and my Facebook page. This has helped me build a decent-sized audience and attract new clients. I didn’t start doing this right away, but I would advise anyone starting out to begin as soon as possible. People like to see the work being done, and they are more likely to hire you once they’ve seen examples of your work.

By sharing your projects online, you not only showcase your skills but also build trust with potential clients. It's a powerful way to market your services and grow your business organically. Additionally, always strive to provide excellent service and maintain good relationships with your clients. Their positive feedback and referrals will be invaluable to your success.
